Bristol started being a town around the Gloucestershire facet from the Avon, but since it grew it extended across the river into Somerset. In 1373 Edward III proclaimed "the city of Bristol with its suburbs and precincts shall henceforth be independent through the counties of Gloucester and Somerset ... Which it should be a county by itself".[50]B
